This morning, both of my Replays reported "No channel guide information is available."

I checked WiRNS, and indeed the guide was empty. I did a WiRNS manual update, then forced a net connect from one of the Replays, and everything was back to normal.

What I guess I'm wondering is, why would the Replay guide be wiped out rather than just not updated? Is there some way to prevent this from happening again?

Glenn:

Are you using the latest build? Running as a service or app?

I've seen that happen to a unit when there has been no provider assigned in the WiRNS config/Replays. However, if I understand correctly, your db was wiped out. That's a new one.

Wayne

I am running the latest version in console mode, not as a service.

I suspect this caused my problem:
[2005-01-10 19:31:07] Guide update timer elapsed. Attempting to commence update.
[2005-01-10 19:31:07] Purging old guide information
[2005-01-10 19:31:10] Update Time: 2005-01-10 19:31:07
[2005-01-10 19:31:10] Updating guide information in the database.
[2005-01-10 19:31:10] Processing guide information for: Mon Jan 10
[2005-01-10 19:31:19] Updating ReplayGuide information

WiRNS purged the guide, but the update didn't happen. What surprised me was the way the Replays reacted to it.

Without changing any settings on WiRNS or the Replays, the guides came back correctly when I initiated the manual processes.

Maybe there's a way for WiRNS to return a guide failure result code to the Replay when the db is empty, so the Replay Guide just doesn't update. I wonder if it's possible to return a "304 Not Modified" for a getcg2 request?

You can try it...

New Plugin.

LoginAuthLogout.dll

If the ReplayTV servers are unreachable, this will return a 304 not modified.
**** This does NOT bypass service activation NOR let you "Steal" service

Go to http://wirns.zapto.org and go to "Just lemme download" near the bottom.

To install:

1. shut down WiRNS
2. unzip the dll from the zip file (LoginAuthLogout.zip) to your WiRNS plugins directory
3. start WiRNS

There is no gurantee!!! Different versions of the ReplayTV software behave differently.

This may not work for you.

I have to admit, this is easier than actually writing the code

Still, I don't think this will prevent the scenario I described. For me, for whatever reason, the WiRNS guide update failed, leaving an empty database. When the Replay connected, the server was there, so no problem from the Replay's point of view. No guide data seems to cause the Replay to assume I would want to clear it's guide.

I had a couple of thoughts, though I was hesitant to suggest them since I should just try coding it myself first.

One was an easier solution involving checking the state of the guide data tables at the start of a request from a Replay to get the channel guide. If stations or schedules is empty, exit the guide update with a 304.

The other was a more complicated approach to the WiRNS guide update, involving temp tables and loading them with data before deleting the data from the actual tables.

As I type this a third thought comes to mind. It seems like sqllite has some form of transaction processing. Perhaps some commit/rollback logic could wrap around the whole guide update process. If the guide ends up empty after processing, a rollback would at least leave it in the previous state, which would probably be better than empty.

Well, I do go on.

If I didn't have so much TV to watch, I could look at some code...

This actually happens now, right? The db-journal files do that.

Let me know when your ready for me to test your code.
