Hello and thank you forum! These are invaluable resources... I personally am a mod on a sailing forum, so I know the dedication it takes...

On to my problem -

I recently sold a brand new 5040 on ebay that I thought had never been out of the box. This was a unit purchased by me from Best Buy pre replaytv demise. Apparently somehow the setup had been started, but not completed showing a zip code and a phone number in the setup menu.

The buyer could not, or more likely WOULD NOT TRY to utilize this machine because he thought replay tv was still in business... I was told that this unit COULD NEVER be used with any of the current programming services because prior programming had begun.

1- Is this true?
or
2- Is there a way to utilize this DVR if a new buyer were to do some due diligence and a little work???... And of course the small program/service fees...

I'd be happy to pull it out of the box and hook it up, but would prefer not to...

Thank you in advance for your time!

HS

There is absolutely a way to still use that unit. Many of us are still actively using our units thanks to Last Hope (or WIRNS, which is not for the novice). Last Hope operates almost identically as the old server did. There are instructions on how to set everything up, and how to subscribe for the low cost, on http://www.percdata.com/.

If you, or your buyer, needs more info, you can continue to use this forum or email the percdata admin.

sbwinter 2...

Absolutely grateful for your time and valuable info... I suspected all could be rectified, and the unit utilized...

Thank you again!

Nice FAQ is here: http://wiki.xmltv.org/index.php/ReplayTV2

In addition, ReplayTVs are also analog only.

They require a digital tuning adapter to receive over-the-air broadcasts.
or
They require a cable box if your provide doesn't provide analog service. Most providers are stopping analog service.

The above two solutions require the use of the IR blaster. Perc/LaHo and WiRNS can provide IR codes for newer DTA/cableboxes.

So while they continue to work (and work well), there are fewer simple-install cases as when we lived in an analog world and ReplayTV (the company) was alive.
