Looks like Archie will not be able to resurrect the poopli website.
Quote:
Sorry Poopli people, it's been a long time coming but the end is here.
It's not the way I wanted to end Poopli, but like the series finale of Roseanne, we've got to make due with what we're working with. The system suffered some major damage due to the hosting provider upgrading what was one of their oldest systems. I'm not blaming them at all but it did set a sequence of events that really messed things up.

Between rebuilding some deprecated classes that I can no longer support - namely the modules that import the feeds from the poopli updater - and having to upgrade the dependencies, some additional server modules, and having not really touched the code in a few years, it's going to be an impossible task to get done any time soon.
At the same time, the outage caused a data corruption issue by essentially writing empty data into ongoing show requests - this caused the database to shut itself down and the backup memory database took over.

As the main database sputtered to life every now and then, the memory data dumped and synced. Unfortunately the sync was off and this caused even more issues. Long story short, Poopli is going to sleep now. What started as a fun project to demonstrate some database migration utilities took on a life of it's own.

I'd like to thank everyone who donated, contributed to, used, relied on, and helped develop Poopli over the years. There have been many people that have helped grow our little community and for that I am grateful. Next weekend I'll clean up some of the code and post it all to GitHub for anyone that might want to take the reigns. I've got a snapshot of a working DB and the code before things went sideways.

It no longer works on the current server setup but I am sure someone with some time can get her working again. I wish you all well.

Take care! -- Archie

Is there anyone out there that can pick up where Archie left off?

This is terrible news. I wish I had some free time to take a look at it - maybe once it's posted to GitHub someone with some time can...

Even getting the main request page up and running would be helpful.

^+1

I will be very sad to see Poopli disappear. It is the goto site for IVS transfer requests. I realize that the same function can be accomplished through Planet Replay, but it does not have the 'eyes' of Poopli.

I rarely use the database functionality anymore. But Poopli does facilitate communications between long time users for current show requests to cover those ever annoying 'oh s**t' moments.

Thanks to truckie36 for passing that along.

Archie says he's going to put the code up on github or somewhere. I'd be happy to participate in an effort to figure out how to get it to run again. I'm not sure how big a project it'll be or how good a match any of it'll be for my skill set. I fear that it's more complicated than I imagine, because if it were trivial Archie would surely have done it. But I hope we will be able to find the right group of people amongst the poopli-people.

That's assuming there's an eager constituency to make it worthwhile. Does anyone know how many people have really been using poopli lately? I hope it's not just me getting shows from "truckie36" when my disks flake out, or I'm unable to remember to notice broadcast schedule changes...

How are you supposed to request a show using Planet Replay? Give the show title, episode and your IVS #?

Any particular discipline to the "Subject" line to use?

I have some experience in PHP programming and access to hosting on Hostgator. I would be willing to host the Poopli application and try to get it going again, although I would prefer not to try to tackle it alone.

You can get a free account on github, you just can't create any private repositories for free. With an free account, you can pull code from any publicly accessible code repository.

Still in mourning. Been away a couple weeks with hopes that Poopli might be back, but saw the note from Archie. Came back to here and see a bit of life, and a method to still transfer shows, if needed.

Am willing to help in any way, but missing most skills, being an oldie. Can help with any other menial tasks, though.

Would be great if we could get a list of anyone that has logged into Poopli over the past few months (or year) to notify and keep up to date on any progress. Always a great gang that were very helpful.

Still looking to redeem some Poopli points, too!

Some of us are willing to try to fix Poopli and have emailed Archie, but no replies. It ultimately all depends on someone reaching him and his willingness to make his Poopli code and database available.

This reminds me of how out of date my old coding skills are. The thought I have is that it'd be good to boil down what is essential to a Poopli-2.

* A means of requesting shows/episodes from the rest of the community.
* A (simple?) database of Primary IVS Unit ID's that supports requests.

Secondary would be the large database of everyones shows. Very nice, but maybe a secondary objective?

We did hear back from Archie, and I'm hopeful that we'll see his code at some point. But I think Archie is quite busy, and I know from experience that it may take a while to clean it up for public consumption. My poopli withdrawal is such that I started writing a new poopli yesterday. I don't know how long it'll be before I have something to start testing - I'm not far enough down the line to have an idea yet. I know Paul is interested in contributing; Other people drop me a line and we'll see what we can accomplish.

At some point it would be nice to be able to get control of the poopli.com A record and enough of Archie's database to have the RTV serial # to contact email mappings, because that seems to be all you need. There are WiRNS's, and "Poopli Updaters", and "Mongos", and who knows what else pitching guide data at that poopli.com URL every night.

What do think the chances of having a link on the poopli.com site that points people to the forum here:
http://www.planetreplay.com/phpBB2/viewforum.php?f=20
So, that they can ask for shows, until something else comes along.

I had a few hours yesterday and I made some progress; I've got a server now that handles the uploads from WiRNS/Poopli-Updater/whatever and builds the database of recordings.

Some of you probably realize this was the easy part; next up is either the sort of cheesy user interface I could write, or a "web service" API to allow people to write better user interfaces.

In the meantime, those of you that know how to fool your WiRNS/Poopli-Updater/whatever into thinking my server is "poopli.com", maybe you can send some guide data my way? I want to make sure there aren't any surprises lurking in it that I didn't see in mine. There should be many ways to fool your poopli client; I found the windows hosts file was effective for WiRNS.

The service is running on poopli.volpe.com (199.241.200.76).

I'm still hoping that it'll be possible to get control of the poopli.com DNS record and the RTV/ISN/Owner part of Archie's database, so that we can bring it all up again and surprise people with show requests. We'll see.

If you can give me a little more instruction on how to point my WiRNS to your server I would be more than happy to send my guide data (just shy of 10,000 shows).

I did a trial to update my windows host file and pointed to the above IP. Let me know if you see any updates from my replays. They all start with the name Orion. (All 5K series)

Here are some instructions for changing the Host file.

Right click on Notepad and Run as administrator.
File > Open > Computer > Local Disk (C) > Windows > System32 > drivers > etc
In the lower right corner change from Text Documents to All Files.
Double click on Hosts
Add the following at the bottom of the text.

199.241.200.76 poopli.com
199.241.200.76 www.poopli.com

Click File > Save

For what it's worth, that worked for me on my windows XP machine - but I also put in a line for "www.poopli.com". I'm not 100% sure which name the uploader uses, but I think it's www.poopli.com. And I restarted WiRNS, because I think it caches it.

I'll let you know when I actually see some guide data - not yet.

Thanks! Now I've got guide data from:

    50.159.1.215
    69.205.43.127
    209.34.14.133

for these RTV's:

Code:

RTV4040C4DR5000646
RTV4504J3TB2000102
RTV4508A5AA7478593
RTV4508F2AA5000791
RTV4508F2AA5001103
RTV4508G2AA7001173
RTV4508H2AA7001620
RTV4508H3TB2000746
RTV4508K4DR5000380
RTV4532E2TB2000334
RTV5032A5AA7114274
RTV5040D3MA0201572
RTV5040J2CA0121179
RTV5040K2CA0123886
RTV5060A3CA0174847
RTV5504H3MA0224044
RTV5508H4MA0206307
RTV5516A5AA8993648

Three of them are mine, but the rest are not. This is enough to go on for today, I think, but people are welcome to send more. I did find an entry or two in there that looked a little different than anything in my guide data.

Also getting lots of attempted PHP exploits from crypto-soldiers in China and Russian teenagers.

I'm working on the circa-1985 web 0.9 user interface when I have a few minutes here and there.
