This primer was posted on the Poopli forum, and I thought it really needed to be posted here as well:

There are three things you must do for IVSmagic to work correctly:

A) Install IVSmagic on a Windows-based PC and leave this PC running 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

B) Reconfigure your router.

C) Configure your account here on Poopli correctly. Because this is important not only for IVSm, but also the Poopi Updater application (a separate and independent program from IVSm), this will be covered in post #2 of this thread for easier linking.

Edit:

D) You must have a 5000 series ReplayTV on the same network as the PC running IVSmagic.
(Thanks, drisner)

---------------------------------------------------------

A) Install IVSmagic on a Windows-based PC and leave this PC running 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

1a) Go to http://www.replaytvupgrade.com/ivsmagicbeta/ -- this page answers many basic questions about IVSmagic. At the bottom of that page there is a link to download the installation program. The installation is fairly straightforward, and once it is installed, the interface is web-based. The installation program will ask you for the IP address of your ReplayTV and the port that it uses for IVS.

If you don’t know the IP address of your ReplayTV, you can find it by using your remote control: press "Menu", then select "Settings", then highlight "Ethernet".

Sidebar: If your ReplayTV unit is set to request a dynamic IP address, you should assign a static one or set the router so that the lease time on dynamic addresses is "forever" or something similar. A dynamic IP address may cause the IP address of the ReplayTV unit to change from time to time, which would cause IVSm not to work (among other potential problems). If you don't understand what a dynamic or static IP address is or how to make those changes, post a question in the forums -- the people here are pretty friendly, and someone else can probably explain it better than I can.

If you don't know the port your ReplayTV uses, you can also find it by using your remote control: press "Menu", then select "Settings", then highlight "Video Sharing".

1b) Update IVSm to the latest version (0.9.8.13 as of this post) from the "Status" page (the "home" page for IVSm). At the bottom of the first section (called "application status") of this page, if the program needs to be updated, you will see a message telling you so, with a link to click that will do it for you.

1c) At the bottom of this same page, you will see a section labeled "smart poopli updater", which will list the ReplayTV you entered during installation. You will notice that there is a check box labeled "received". Checking this box will allow you to send shows that you have received from other ReplayTVs (bonus!). Clicking on the "update" box updates the Poopli website with your show information.

2) If you have more than one ReplayTV, click on the link on the left that says "replays". That will take you to a page where you can enter the IP address and port of any additional ReplayTVs. Important: once you have entered the information for the additional ReplayTVs, be sure to click the 'update sytem configuration' link.

3) Click on the "scheduler" link on the left. This allows you to control when IVSm updates the Poopli database with the shows from your ReplayTV.

If you would like IVSm to run as a service on Windows XP, go to the IVSmagic program group in the Start menu and choose "Register IVSmagic as a service". There are many other options there, most of which are self-explanatory.

B) Reconfigure your router.

If you originally configured your router for the ReplayTV to successfully do IVS (which you must have if you have ever sent or received a show), you opened a port in the firewall to forward traffic for that port to the IP address of your ReplayTV.

You must now forward that traffic from the ReplayTV IVS port to the PC that is running IVSmagic, which is why the PC should stay on 24/7; when the PC is not on, your ReplayTV cannot be contacted for other people to send you shows.

If you can edit that setting, simply change the IP address from the ReplayTV IP address to the IP address of the IVSm computer.

If you cannot edit that setting, make a new one with all the same information, except change the IP address from the ReplayTV IP address to the IVSm computer IP address, then delete the old setting.

If you have been on Poopli for some time, you probably have already done this correctly, but it’s worth a review.

1) Log in to Poopli and go to the 'Account Details' page at http://www.poopli.com/e1525/servlet/acctServlet.

2) Click the check box labeled 'Publish shared show listing'.

3) Click on your ReplayTV ID#. That will bring up a window of your 'Replay Unit Details'.

3a) In the field that says 'Unit Name' enter the 'Nickname' of your ReplayTV. The correct ‘Nickname’ to enter that comes up when you test your IVS connection at http://www.replaytvupgrade.com/ivstest (for the test, you will need your IVS #, which is a 15-digit number in the format 00004-xxxxx-xxxxx).

Note: If your 'Nickname' is something generic or common like 'Bedroom' or 'Living Room', you should seriously consider changing it to something that is unique, preferably something resembling your Poopli user name. On your ReplayTV unit, this 'Nickname' is actually your 'Internet Identity'. To change it, go to your ReplayTV unit, and from the remote, choose 'Menu', then 'Setup', then 'Internet Identity and Address Book', then 'Change Internet Identity'.

Having the 'Unit Name' in Poopli match the 'Internet Identity' of your ReplayTV unit (as well as having one that is unique) makes it easier for people to know they have added the correct unit to their address book, and makes it easier to send to you more than once because when you go to send a show, the ReplayTV unit doesn't show the numbers, just the names.

3b) From the drop-down list, choose your ReplayTV model. It matters what model you list only in that the 4xxx series cannot send to or receive from the 5xxx series (and vice-versa). Depending on what model you enter, Poopli will only show you shows from users that have the same series as you.

3c) Where it says 'Serial #' it is *important* that you correctly list the serial number of your ReplayTV. This can be found by pressing the 'Menu' key on your remote, and then choosing 'Setup', and then choosing 'System Information'.

3d) Where it says “ReplayTV ID”, enter the IVS number (the 15-digit number in the format 00004-xxxxx-xxxxx).

3e) Make sure the 'Shared' check box is *not* checked, and do *not* enter anything into the 'MyRTV ID' and 'MyRTV Password' boxes.

These are from a time when the website used to check MyReplayTV.com for Poopli members' show databases; the website now requires using either the Poopli Updater, IVSm or WiRNS (which I haven't ever installed and have no idea how to use).

3f) Click the 'Update Unit' button.
