With the Good Will effort, it caused me to think of another issue. I have software version 530511400 running on my units. I have read someplace (likely here) that improvements to that base level have been made to improve closed captions, and maybe something else.

Is there a way, to stage a software update, in a Wirns managed environment to apply what useful improvements have been discovered, without doing a 'bad' software update that trashes IVS, and Commercial Skip logic that we're able to script enable?

Thanks
Cliff

You may be talking about this post, which is for the 55xx units to get the latest fixes contained in 530511400. I am not aware of any fixes for version 530511400 itself, however...

If you want to apply that software update to a 55xx via WiRNS, then you would download the MySoftwareUpdate plugin from WiRNS Extras and build an update from the update files that Ryan posted on AVSForum...

that was a funny thread. folks dug up the past & found I hinted at it ages ago. Anyway, it is a factory reset image, so U can just image your drive with it and go for it.

Thanks Henry and Robert. I 'tried' to make heads or tails of that series of threads and links, but.... well I frankly got lost.

Thanks!

Ryan, not Robert...

Anyway, I hope we at least answered your questions. There aren't any updates newer than the version that you questioned. The RTV operating system is protected, and to make updates you also have to be able to make new support files for each module. What Ryan did was to take pieces of the new operating system with the support files along with pieces of the older operating system with the support files. So, he didn't really generate anything new, he just pieced together a bunch of different existing pieces to make something that had the IVS and CA support for a 55xx, but also had the current fixes. There's not been anything new generated since then...

In addition, if you did want to serve updates, you could use the WiRNS MySoftwareUpdate plugin. Or, as Ryan mentioned, just build a new image with the changes, which is what he did...

I have a related question - last night / morning I researched all of the current EXTRA files and came across MySoftwareUpdate-v2. Unfortunately, it appears that it will *ONLY* update from 190 to 144 ("This package will only upgrade from b019[530510190] to b144[530511440]"). SEARCHing through the ZIP, the *ONLY* reference I could find to 190 was in "ClauvaEncoder.out.gz".

Would it be a SIMPLE exercise for one of the WiRNS Gurus to modify that 190 to 144 so that I could use that software to update from "Ryan's 144A" to "Ryan's 144A"?

REASON: A few months ago, the original 160GB HDD in my 'Refurbished' 5516 stopped booting. It's now in a pile, awaiting a 'Round Tuit', to EXTRACT the programs to another HDD. I replaced it with a freshly 'Diagnosed' / Formatted / 'Imaged w/Ryan's 144A' Maxtor 300GB that previously resided in an External USB Maxtor Enclosure - it appears that the PCB inside went bad because the HDD wouldn't work via USB but when I pulled the drive and ran Maxtor Diagnostics on my old Pentium 233, it passed.

Recently, edits to the 5516 have resulted in "OFF COLOR" screens, needing a re-boot. And WARM re-boots have consistently failed. Thus, a COLD re-boot is necessary, leading me to believe that BAD SECTORS have appeared in SYS1. Since this ReplayTV is DEDICATED to recording TCM movies for my dear wife, I'd hate to have to add it to the 'Round Tuit' pile.

The ability to update "Ryan's 144A" in SYS1 to "Ryan's 144A" in SYS2 would be *GREAT*! (i.e. if that fails, then a re-format will be mandatory, but if it succeeds... )

Thanks!

MY bad. Just got back from vacation and mistyped. I really do know you guys! Sorry.

I guess about all that I would think that would be useful would be to more reliably have support for closed captions. It's not a huge thing to me, but often helpful in scenes where the dialog isn't really distinct, and I don't want to miss a plot point.

I understand that I can do a factory reset image, and now that we are in the period between one TV season and the next, may pull down of off RTV save unwatched shows so that I can do that re-image.

I was also stymied as I reviewed the indicated threads to see the version restriction on the mysoftwareupdate thread.

Thanks RYAN and Henry. Always appreciative!

I am confused! You said that you are running version 530511400, which is the latest version. So, where are you going to get better support for closed captions, and how is doing a factory reset image going to do anything for you?

Here is the snipit from the AVS thread that got me thinking.
Quote:
There IS a patched 144 for the 55xx out there. It has the CC fix and keeps CA/IVS

I took it that the 144 version was newer than the 530511400 I had.

I Had always 'understood' that the LATEST build from Replay was one build too new for IVS/CA. Hence the nosoftwareupdate function in Wirns. Right? So when I saw that Ryan had a patched reset image (in my mind) newer than the 530511400 I had, I figured it was something to check into.

I sure don't mean to confuse folks more than I am confused!

Well, that's what I tried to explain to you in my first post. 144 is the latest version. That one doesn't support CA/IVS on the 55xx's (which you don't care about if you are already running 530511440 - I assume that is a typo about your version in your original post). So, Ryan built up an image which has a mix of an OLDER version of software which DOES support CA/IVS on the 55xx, and included newer modules from the 144 version to make sure that it had all the current fixes. So, technically it is a patch version of the latest version to give it some of the older capabilities, that's what Ryan was trying to say. It means that he patched the latest version with CA/IVS support for the 55xx to have the 144 updates but still have CA/IVS support for the 55xx. That's why he said it is a patched version of 144 because he patched it with OLDER modules to give it the CA/IVS support for the 55xx. Actually, I'm not even sure now if he patched an older version with the 144 updates, or if he patched the latest version 144 with older modules. Either way, it reports being version 144, but has the CA/IVS support for the 55xx...

There is nothing newer than 144...

But, now I realize that you say you are running version 530511400, which is version 140 which supports IVS/CA on the 55xx, in which case that ISN'T the latest version, and you could upgrade to version 530511440 (144). So, I don't know if you have a typo in your original post or if you really are running the older version to support IVS/CA on the 55xx. I didn't notice that little difference originally, so maybe I was confused as well. If you actually have 55xx's and are running version 530511400, then you probably would like to upgrade to Ryan's patched version 530511440 to give you a 144 version for your 55xx's which still has the IVS/CA support for your 55xx's. So, I think I am now confused about your original post, you need to clarify if you are talking about 55xx's and are running version 530511400 or version 530511440...

And, just to make things less clear, there was a version 530511430 (143) which had a lot of the fixes and still supports IVS/CA on the 55xx's. That is considered to be the best unmodified version for 55xx's, but it is difficult to find. It was shippped on many 55xx's originally, but then the software update updates them to 530511440. However, units which were shipped with 530511430 and updated to 530511440 can be rolled back to 530511430 because the RTV saves one previous version of software. Since you say you have version 530511400, again, I don't know if that is a typo, or the version that was already on your RTVs, or a version that you manually imaged onto your RTVs...

Do you know of anyone who has this version? It would be nice to get an archive of it.

I've seen posts of people having it or looking for it, especially on AVSForum, so you might want to ask there. I have a brand new unboxed 55xx that I thought I would check some day if I ever got around to it. Of course, now that Ryan posted his "patched" version 144, why would anyone want to use the 143 version? Ryan's "patched" 144 should be the best one to use! If you were going to reimage anyways, which is what you are talking about archiving, wouldn't it be better to archive Ryan's version which has all the 144 fixes instead of the 143 version?

The original post has the same 530511400 that I see now on the system info screen.

Sorry for any confusion. I was just hoping that there was a straight forward way of having the 'improved' 144 version loaded, w/o dismounting drives, etc.

Thanks Always!

OK, I get it now! So, are these actually 55xx units that you have that version installed to support IVS/CA? If so, as I've posted a couple of times now, you can use the WiRNS MySoftwareUpdate plugin to have WiRNS update your RTV software version without having to take apart your RTV. However, it would be up to you to use the existing plugin, get Ryan's image, and then create the update files for MySoftwareUpdate to use...

So, the answer to your original question about if there is a way to have WiRNS "stage a software update", the answer is "Yes!", use the MySoftwareUpdate plugin and create the update files that you want to have updated...

Actually, I just looked at the MySoftwareUpdate package, and it's probably not all that much trouble. The package says that it already includes Ryan's "patched" 144 OS for the 55xx. It says that you need to be specifically running version 530510190, but I think what it really means is that you can't already be running version 530511440, which you aren't. So, I guess if you just wanted to give it a try on one of your RTVs that you don't mind what happens to it, then just download the package and follow the instructions in the Readme and let us know how it works out!

I'm trying but missing something.

1) Unzip 530511440.zip to the root of your web server's html directory (will end up http://server/swupdate/530511440...)
2) Edit the first 3 lines of swupdate by changing your.server.name to a valid name/IP (where the files live from step 1)

I'm confused a bit by 1 and 2.

I Unzipped the 530511440.zip to the root of my WIRNS System C:drive.
In the swupdate file, now in the wirns dir, I put the IP address in the tope 3 lines like this.

#192.168.1.159
#192.168.1.159
#192.168.1.159
## Generated by mkmanifest v4 on Sat Sep 18 23:27:55 2004

I renamed the nosoftwareupdate files in the plugins, and put the mysoftwareupdate.dll file in the plug ins folder.
I used his shellcmds

restarted Wirns

replay updates and ends with the There was a problem updating. . .

The checking for software updates part of the update, just flashed by in a second.

You should put the unZIPped files into the WiRNS directory, so they should come out in C:\WiRNS\swupdate when you are done...

The IP address you put in the file is the IP address of WiRNS...

When you do the net connect, you should see WiRNS log something like:

[PLUGIN] MySoftwareUpdate using swupdate from file.

To indicate that it is working...

I added a MySoftwareUpdate-v3 to the WiRNS Download Extras. I decided that posted version of MySoftwareUpdate-v2 was WAY too old, so I posted a WiRNS3 version of the MySoftwareUpdate plugin...

Differences in this version of the plugin is that it definitely supports having the swupdate files in the WiRNS folder (I don't know if that older version supported that or not). In addition, you have to put the swupdate file in the directory with the serial number of the RTV that you want to software upgrade. I have noted these changes in the Readme...

I have updated the MySoftwareUpdate-v3 again, so if you already downloaded it, download it again. I took out the step about editing the swupdate file and the step about editing the shellcmds. That was only necessary if you used a different web server than WiRNS and WiRNS3 already takes care of the shellcmds for you. I setup the swupdate file to use WiRNS, so you only have to unzip the 530511440.zip into the WiRNS install directory and then copy the swupdate file into the serial number folder that matches the RTV that you want to upgrade...

Well, it sure 'appeared' to work. It loaded the software update, and on the next net connect, reported that it would re-boot to load the new software, but system info still reports, 530511400 not the expected newer version.

It did do the reboot, so it thinks it has new software, but, just aren't getting it to 'take'. Did a 243Zones to clear the channel guide to force another reboot, and another net connect. No new software prompts.

Seemed like a good try.

Thanks

If it had actually worked, then it should report version 530511440 instead of 530511400...

When you look at the 4-1-1-Zones page, does it show that it's using sys1 or sys2? Do you remember which one it was using previously?

After the upgrade, WiRNS automatically turns off future updates, so that's why it doesn't do it again. Would you mind posting your WiRNS log section from the net connect that performed the upgrade?

Yeah, that all looks pretty much as I expected. You can see that it took a pretty long time between loading MySoftwareUpdate and XactProvider, almost 6 minutes, so that should have been when it was downloading the software update...

However, I don't see the RTV ever request the name of the swupdate server, so I'm wondering if you put the new swupdate file from the MySoftwareUpdate-v3.zip file into the RTV5504H3MA0224044 folder? Maybe you left the old one in there that had IP addresses in it instead? You should be able to look at swupdate.1339077656 in that folder to see if it is the new one, with ReplayTV looking server names, or the old one, with IP addresses or maybe even "server your.server.name", which would have also made it not work very well...

Also, when you look at the 4-1-1-Zones screen to see that it is using SYS1, does it still show version 530511400?

Henry,

Did it all over again. It sure looks like a normal Software upgrade sequence. Loading New Software, Need to reboot prompts and all, but remains on sys1 and 530511400.

I unzipped the newest ver3 made sure all of any previous files related were gone etc and replaced them again with the latest. The swupdate file went into the wirns folder for that serial number of RTV. ANd it gets renamed as expected.

Want the log again? Not sure it'll be any different.

Thanks
Cliff

I posted a new MySoftwareUpdate-v3.zip in the Extras Download directory which will log much more information. Please download this new version and install everything in the WiRNS directory. Try a net connect again, and if it doesn't work any better, post the WiRNS log for the net connect activity...

All 'seems' well, but after the RTV does the reboot after the SW load, it comes back to the sys1 and the current rather than new version.

Well, this looks much better that the RTV is asking for the server to serve the software update! I have to assume that your last posting of this that the swupdate file was the wrong one which did not have the correct server names in it...

And, this is good, too! So, at least we confirmed that all the upgrade files got served properly (but, way too much logging)!

Quite honestly, I have no idea if this software upgrade has ever been tested. Much less, I have no idea if it is actually the "patched" version to put version 530511440 on a 55xx and retain IVS/CA, I just assumed that from the Readme. I don't really see any posts about anyone actually using it, and the only posts I see are actually yours, Cliff, about you getting errors from having MySoftwareUpdate loaded a long, long time ago (2005)...

Anyway, I have no idea about the actual update files, I think we need to ask Ryan if this update has actually ever been tested. I know the Readme says that it should bring the unit to version530511440 because it says that it will then no longer request an upgrade from DNNA, and I know his post about the "patched" image says that it will show as version 530511440. I suppose I could try extracting all the files from the "patched' image he posted and compare them against the files in this software update package and see if they are the same. But, we might start with finding out if he actually tested this package on anything to determine that it actually works. I've been going under the assumption that the upgrade package works properly, and just fixing the MySoftwareUpdate plugin to serve it properly...

Oh, I forgot to ask, while the RTV is loading the software upgrade, does the percentage go up appropriately? There are some numbers in the swupdate file that I had to recalculate, but I could put Ryan's original numbers back to try it again. Actually, you could try using the swupdate file from the v2 download and simply edit the first three lines to have the server names from the v3 download and see if that works any differently...

Yes, the percentages went up as the update was working.

Thanks for all of the attention on this. It's a neat thing to be able to do via Wirns, and sure seems close, but it's an icing on the cake level feature.

Yeah, the not found was a deal with how the zip, unziped and made an extra level of folders. Saw that and moved the files to where they needed to be.

I've looked at the MySoftwareUpdate package and looked at Ryan's image, and they certainly look like the same thing. In fact, it looks like Ryan's image was created using the MySoftwareUpdate package (which would make sense). I happen to also have a trace of watching a 530511400 version unit upgrade to 530511440, and the upgrade information is pretty much identical to that MySoftwareUpdate package. So, it's kind of hard to say. The MySoftwareUpdate plugin uses a different technique to send the update files than DNNA, but I think it's unlikely that causes any problems. In addition, Ryan wrote in the Readme that you have to be running version 530510190 to use the update package, but my looking at my own unit upgrading from 530511400 makes me think that it should work OK.

So, two things. First, you should try using the swupdate file from the v2 package and change the first three lines to the first three lines from the v3 package and try the update again. In fact, to make sure that maybe I didn't mess something up, I would use EVERYTHING from the v2 package, but use the MySoftwareUpdate plugin from the v3 package, and the first three lines of the swupdate file from the v3 package. So, specifically use the 530511440 zipped file from the v2 package. You should probably delete the swupdate folder from your WiRNS installation first. Then, unzip the 530511440 zip file from the v2 package into the WiRNS installation. And, unzip the v2 swupdate file into the RTV's serial number folder, but then edit that file and copy the first three lines of the v3's swupdate file over the first three lines of that file...

Second, if you feel up to it, if you want to run WireShark while performing the upgrade and send me the trace file, I can look at it to see if I see anything obvious...
