|

The ReplayTV Service Phone Number in, ReplayTV Setup, was changed to the single choice of (123) 555-0100 Any Town, USA, when I installed WiRNS 3.0. This was fine for my RTV. I have a laptop with VMWare and FreeSCO, a phone line simulator with power supply, working fine with a direct connection to a 2K RTV. I have my desktop computer set up with WiRNS,VMWare and FreeSCO and a U.S.Robotics Courier V.EVERYTHING modem on Com 1. I want to connect this WiRNS machine to my mother and step dad's 2K RTV with my phone line. They live about 10 miles away and do not have an Internet connection to their apartment. What is the easiest way for me to get my phone number in their 2k RTV? If needed, I can bring their unit to my place and connect it to my computer with the phone simulator and power supply. I would rather not have to enter my number as a Prefix with some pauses ahead of 555-0100.

The phone numbers are stored in the WiRNS registry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WiRNS\configuration. You want to edit the localNum key, which contains that default phone number, to the phone number that you'd like their SS to dial. You'll probably also want to edit the globalNum, which contains a "fake" 800 number, with your number as well. That's the number that gets dial when you change ZIP codes. You'll want to check out this post and follow on disucssion...
As far as getting into their SS, you have two or three choices. Number one, use the prefix selection to enter the phone number for it to dial you, an alternate to this would be to pre-dial the phone number as their SS is performing the net connect. Or, bring their unit over and connect it with your emulation setup, which will program the number...

I had read that thread earlier and had even searched the registry for the (123) 555-0100 phone number. I must have typed it in wrong or something. RegEdit found it in a few seconds tonight. I did change both numbers to my own phone number in this laptop Wirns computer. I will change them in the desktop Wirns computer that really needs them tomorrow.
Thanks Henry for all the hard work you have put in to Wirns.

I tried to connect several times entering my number as a prefix in their SS. I tried it with and without pauses. It never connected. I brought their 2K RTV to my house and connected it using the phone line simulator. It connected and took my phone number, loaded the Wirns local OTA channels guide, and killed the nag screens. I turned "wait for dial tone" back on in the RTV.
I set my desktop computer not to go to sleep. The modem was turned on and connected to my home phone line. I set up my FreeSCO, rebooted and ran "killall mgetty". The modem showed AA led lit. Wirns 3.0 was ready to intercept/proxy ReplayTV requests.
I returned the RTV to my mom's place. (25-30 min. drive) I still could not connect with a 243 Zones Net connect. I tried several times. It never showed anything past "Connecting...". I did not check the RTV clock when I got there. After several connection attempts, I looked at the Clock Toggle and it looked correct. They have an EPG through 8-1-11. So I left the RTV there.
FreeSCO did not show any activity while I was gone. The modem is an exterior Courier V.Everything. The Auto Answer and High Speed connection leds were lit. (I did not note the status of the other leds.) Does anyone have any ideas as to why this SS will not connect to my computer/modem over a phone line? |

After getting their SS setup at your place, did you change the ZIP code so that it loaded the new phone number, and did you then select the dialing preference for dialing your number from their place?
I gues you could listen on the phone line when the SS dials to see if it sounds anything like it's proper dial your phone number correctly...

I do not remember the exact sequence of events. I know that I did change the zip code Sunday because I had the time 1 hour fast. The Time Zone thread said the zip code must be changed for the time zone change to take effect. That worked fine.
I chose the same phone number format without a leading 1 but with area code. ( (123) 555-0100 ) We must dial the area code here on all local calls.
I believe the RTV is dialing out correctly. The next time that I am at my mom's, I will listen to the connection at least once.
The SS should call my computer sometime tonight. I turned mgetty back on with settings of Phonesim: y Delay1: 20 Delay2: 600 PPPDOPT: -d
Thanks Henry,

Their RTV did not try to connect last night. Today I talked my step-dad through a 243 Zones Net Connect. It connected on the first try and updated their EPG till 8-3-11.
All I did was make sure that mgetty was running with "chmod 755 /pkg/sbin/mgetty" at the Linux prompt. I had previously edited the mgetty file for Phonesim=y, Delay1=20, and Delay2=600. I did not change PPPDOPT that was set to -d.
With only 9 local channels selected, it only took 1.4 minutes to update their EPG. Maybe the RTV will call without being forced tonight.
Thanks Henry,
Charles |

I hope you changed that to your REAL phone number, because that would certainly explain why it isn't connecting (although you said it worked, so hopefully that wasn't the problem)...
