The backup-2 RDDNS service was stopped.. I restarted it.

I suspect there is a bug that causes a crash with a bad http request. It hit one server, then the other one, taking both down.

In a totally unrelated note, I started the transfer of the RDDNS domain name. There's a chance that can cause an intermittent outage... I can't change the DNS servers in advance.

My HOSTS file is pointing everything towards only Backup-1. My DNS is still showing down. Should I re-write the HOSTS file so that it points to Backup-1 and Backup-2 now?

Are both backup servers working(unless hit by the bug)?

Thanks.

Yes, we currently have control of both "backup" rddns servers.

Soon we'll have the domain too.

I'm still showing my RDDNS down. I have changed my HOSTS file back to the original one so that it will go to backup-1 and backup-2.

When I check my IVS on the Lunatic Haven site, that is down, too.

Are there other settings that I should be checking?

Please be specific with your replies as to how to fix this. I'm a NEWB, with a capital N.

FYI.. RDDNS.CC will probably go down today as the domain transitions to me. Should be back once I have a chance to fix it.

RDDNS.CC transfer is completed. Let me know if there are any problems.

Thanks Dreamer!

WiRNS.com reports Ryan's server is down. I'll ping him.. in the mean time I've updated DNS.

So, I have a question for those who know how RDDNS works...

I assume the ReplayTV devices access "rddns-production.replaytv.net".

What do they do when that host is down? I think there are names 'rddns-backup, rddns-backup1, etc'. Are those just placeholder names on our side that the ReplayTV devices never actually use?

Does WiRNS access the RDDNS server or does it just replace DNS lookups?

rddns.cc used to point to both of our RDDNS servers, yet people would report "RDDNS is down" when just one of the RDDNS server is down.

Now I'm wondering if that's a bad idea. Pointing RDDNS.CC to two hosts seems to double the downtime as it's unusable if either host is down. If that's the case, I'm better off just putting one host at that name. (backup hostnames would still be there of course)

So, who's the RDDNS expert?

If it's showing Down on your WiRNS status page, that's not necessarily a 100% good indicator. It's basically performing an ISN lookup of one of your known Replays.

I would suggest trying an ISN Lookup (Under Tools) of a Replay you know should be found in the RDDNS database, preferably someone else's.

Do I need to add anything to my windows host file to send data to replaytv.net?
And do I need a WIRNS.host file in the WIRNS folder? What should be in it?
Can you send examples of what you have typed into these files.

If you're running the newest version of WiRNS, you shouldn't need a wirns.hosts file.

If you want to try one, mine is full of stuff you don't need, but nothing that should make it worse paranoid

Code:
# Production addresses
production.replaytv.net=
production-1.replaytv.net=
production-2.replaytv.net=
production-backup.replaytv.net=
#
production.laho.percdata.com=
production-1.laho.percdata.com=
production-2.laho.percdata.com=
production-backup.laho.percdata.com=
#
production.hd.pcdvr.replaytv.net=
production-1.hd.pcdvr.replaytv.net=
production-2.hd.pcdvr.replaytv.net=
production-backup.hd.pcdvr.replaytv.net=
#
production.hd.pcdvr.laho.percdata.com=
production-1.hd.pcdvr.laho.percdata.com=
production-2.hd.pcdvr.laho.percdata.com=
production-backup.hd.pcdvr.laho.percdata.com=
#
# NTP server
ntp-production.replaytv.net=us.pool.ntp.org
ntp-production.laho.percdata.com=us.pool.ntp.org
#
# RDDNS Backup Servers
rddns-production.replaytv.net=backup.rddns.cc
rddns-production-1.replaytv.net=backup.rddns.cc
rddns-production-2.replaytv.net=backup.rddns.cc
#
rddns-production.laho.percdata.com=backup.rddns.cc
rddns-production-1.laho.percdata.com=backup.rddns.cc
rddns-production-2.laho.percdata.com=backup.rddns.cc
rddns-production-backup.laho.percdata.com.replaytv.net=backup.rddns.cc
rddns-production-backup.laho.percdata.com=backup.rddns.cc

# 4k requests
rddns-rns.replaytv.net=backup.rddns.cc
rddns-rns-1.replaytv.net=backup.rddns.cc
#

It has the LaHo entries which were there for the scenario where one had previously connected to LaHo. Even those are no longer necessary.
