PostPosted: Sun May 13, 2012 2:53 pm    Post subject: Activation and Hard Drives Reply with quote

I know hard drives are not supposed to do anything to the unit's activation as it is supposed to be on the motherboard. However, with three hard drive replacements since the ReplayTV announce shutdown and reversal last year, each time the machine lost its activation and would not work. Now ReplayTV tech support has fixed the problem and reactivated them each time. I have a new one to call them about tomorrow, hope it goes the same.

Does anyone know why this would be happening? I have 11 ReplayTV's, a mixture of true Lifetime Activated and 2011 Activation ReplyTV did last year around this time. All are on WiRNs off the ReplayTV grid. Replacement drives were off of eBay and the most recent one I did myself with the 5040_530510190.rtv image file from replaytvupgrade.com (and related sites). I figured maybe it was something the eBay seller was doing that was causing it but that is obviously not it. I get the same results now that I finally have a PC setup to create these drives myself.

I have another one to relace a corrupt hard drive on. I guess I get it done and call Replay and have them reactivate two of them again. Thanks for any insight.

I'm having trouble following what you are saying. If you are using WiRNS and staying off "the ReplayTV grid", then what are you calling their tech support about? Are you using WiRNS2 or WiRNS3? If you are using WiRNS3, then it would activate the units irregarless (sic) of anything.

ReplayTV isn't really supporting activation by subscriptoin. All units that connect get activated. I'm not sure what they could even do when you call them because they aren't running the subscription system any longer.

I guess what isn't clear is what you are actually have a problem with? After you replace the hard drive and net connect, what does it show in the Setup Menu under System Information in Unit Info for Service? If it says "Activated", then it is activated.

Maybe if you explain more about the problem we can figure out what needs to be done. I've replaced several hard drive and not had any problem, I'm sure lots of others have as well. It could be something about your usage of WiRNS that's causing a problem...

Henry, Thanks for the reply. It's been a while for me to get back to this unit that is giving me fits.

Yes, I'm using WiRNs3. Are you saying any machine activated or not will be activated by WiRNs3? I didn't realize it did that, is it automatic or is there something that I must do to cause it to activate?

My specific problem relates to one machine right now, as follows. I may have misstated some things in my original post as I look at the screens in this machine right now. If I go to the System Information Screen is says Service: Activated (one-time fee paid). The unit is connected to my WiRNs IP address in the DNS1 field. And I was able to connect to the WiRNs Channel Guide for our cable feed and it seemed to download it (although I can't get the the channel guide screen).

Problem is when I try to go to the Channel Guide or Replay Guide it comes up with the Registration Screen saying "RePlayTV can no longer be used until you activate your service." I have two options "Remind Me Later" and "Connect Now". Connect Now doesn't ever connect (which makes since since it can't find the "mother ship" because I'm on WiRNs). The remind me later goes to a blank screen and then when I try to go to either Guide this problem repeats.

I have tried multiple net connects, rebooting the Replay unit but still have this screen that comes up wanting me to register an Activated unit.

I had a similar problem before that ReplayTV fixed on two units that seem to lose there activation. He reactivated them in some fashion when I connected to the true mothership. I don't recall those showing as Activated machines so I think this may be a slightly different issue than before.

Unit by its serial number is a 5504, software version 530510190, Service: Activated.

Just a thought did the 5500 units ever have Commercial Advance? This is showing a "default playback options" for CA.

Thanks for any help you can provide.
Neil

What is it I'm supposed to fix? I don't imagine I did since I'm unsure of the fix you are referring too.

I finally did get it to connect, I let it connect to the "mothership" and it cleared up the issue on this one. It was not the same issue as my previous machines as I originally thought.

However, I'm having an issue getting the channel guide to populate with the guide info. everything is blank except the channels the programming is not there. I will do a search I'm sure there is something out there on this. Tried 243 zones and clear channel guide which has usually cleared any issues with switching from Replay guide to WiRNs.

I am interested in the fix you are referring to and any more details on WiRNs3 and it's activation of units? Also do I understand Replay is still activating machines with no fees?

Thanks again for the help.

http://planetreplay.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=15887&highlight=authcmds--heres where they tried to teach me. not as hard as i made it look-its actually a piece of cake. u just make a copy of the original file- authcmds example file- and rename that authcmds and ur done-easy---d--this was on my w7 comp where i had to remove the file and change it then reinsert it into wirns . i could not figure out how to change the security settings but i found that workaround of removing and reinserting

Thanks, got it. Got the guides too. Had to go to the WiRNs PC and find the unit and then did a NetConnect from there and came back an guide data loaded. Thanks for the assistance.

It's a normal part of WiRNS3. Although, you have to at least have an authcmds file to make it work. There is an example file as part of the installation, which you can use as a template file...

If it says "one-time fee paid", then I think you must have an older install of WiRNS3, and that you must have used the example file from that...

Well, one of the likely solutions is to allow it to connect to DNNA to get it back activated. However, if you have your WiRNS3 installation configured properly, it should be able to fully activate your unit. In addition, if the reason you lost your activation was due to imaging a hard drive, the you probably also need to read this post to add to WiRNS3 so that it can fully update a imaged or factory reset hard drive. It may be that the problem you are having is due to the fact that the unit has not been able to fully update, so even though it is activated it still needs to get the rest of the software updates. That would also happen by allowing it to connect to DNNA, but you could accomplish the same thing by adding the MyReplayZones package to your WiRNS3 installation...

The purpose of the release of the 5500 model was specifically to remove Commercial Advance, CA, and Internet Video Sharing, IVS. However, using WiRNS, you can easily turn CA and IVS back on, you just need to read the posts about it...
