Wirns 3, schedules direct, my remap file shows no channels. Unfortunately, if my RTV tunes a channel I don't subscribe to, after a few minutes my FIOS box decides to turn itself off (also stupid since that really doesn't do anything useful.) Once off, all recordings on that RTV record the idiotic turn your FIOS box on message.

I've solved this temporarily by editing my SD subscription but I thought I ought to report it as a bug if you were not already aware. Or maybe I just have some setting wrong.

"In light of this response, ReplayTV and its parent company Digital Networks North America, Inc. have decided to continue the electronic programming guide service pursuant to the terms of your service activation agreement. We thank you very much for all of your support and enthusiasm over the many years these products have been sold."

So what the hell does this mean now? Will Wirns 3.0/SD continue to work without touching the RTV servers now that DNNA gave away the keys to the kingdom? Will DNNA develop new activation keys? Will I continue to be billed the $9.95 a month?

Talk about a screwed-up business decision and a screwy company.

Relax and enjoy the fact that you have more choices. Your WiRNS 3/SD setup will continue as is and you do not need to reconnect to the mothership ever again.

Will DNNA develop new keys? Unlikely, but who knows and who cares? If you continue to use WiRNS or LaHo and don't connect to DNNA it will never matter as your keys will never change.

Will you be billed? Highly unlikely that they would just start billing again after they already stopped. If and when they start billing they will most likely need new approvals. Even if they did just restart you can call them and tell them to stop and issue a credit.

It amazes me that people are angry or resentful towards DNNA for NOT discontinuing service. Whatever their motivation might be for continuing (which is really none of our business) and for however long they do continue, it benefits all of us by providing not only a choice but more time for further WiRNS/LaHo development and maybe even other options.

Obviously DNNA realized that the idea of shutting down service was misconceived and, rather than just burying their heads in the sand, they changed course and maintained the status quo - at least for now. Whether it was from customer feedback, liability exposure, or regulatory heat doesn't matter. Who among us has never made a mistake? At least they've rectified it.

While I would rather have not had to spend the time to learn and set up WiRNS as well as not having to spend money for a used laptop & SD subscription, it's been a great learning experience and I no longer have to wonder how long DNNA continues the service which we've all been wondering about for years. So we should actually thank them for the fire drill as we - as well as they - are now better prepared for the day when they really do pull the plug.

To me, while I'm happy they backed off, it also shows that they didn't think this through at all.

I've been using Wirns for a long time, and it cost me a total of maybe 15 minutes of actual work to install Wirns 3 over Wirns 2.1--my my four RTVs were already running off Wirns. But it's the uncertainty--and making the announcement on the Friday before the Sunday night/Monday morning turn off--that surprises me.

In fact, I'm LESS inclined to do business with DirectTV because of how they handled this, rather than MORE inclined to because the RTV servers got a last minute call from the governor before the execution.

From a purely business point of view, this was very poorly handled by DirectTV.

i hope some kind soul can assist a newbie I'm sure you've had many of us since the epg was going away (and then not). I would like to use wirns3.0 if only to distance myself from DNNA until the dust settles, or maybe to remain independent forever.

I'm trying to run wirns on an old XP machine (SP3). I managed to install and get 3.0.0.0 running just fine about a week ago. Since then I have not managed to start the service (I think the only thing I did was do an update, thinking it would update the replay, not realizing I was invoking a software update!). Since then, I have been SOL, with WIRNS crashing on startup immed after install, and the monitor staying red. I ran startwirns and got the following log. I have tried uninstalling, reinstalling, repairing, deep uninstalling (Revo) but I have no hair left to pull out. Any help appreciated.

Here is from the dos window when run as a console (2 runs, the exception doesnt come up in the same place each time)

Yes, it looks like you have WiRNS running. However, did you follow ALL the steps in this thread:

http://planetreplay.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=15928

It doesn't look like you have added your Replays or have added your SD lineup. Print out the first page of that thread. And, follow and mark off the steps as you do them.

Try updating WiRNS from the Red circle W. If you get the same exception, post the information which will have line numbers...

Trying to authorize new disk/image. i have now tried multiple times on a fresh image to get the network screen to enter wirns ip info. I never get the screen to enter manual ip info. any key i hit give me the register screen.

when trying 243 replay zones, a net connect only works if connected to internet and system says will try again if unable to connect.

any idea'S. this is a key piece to keeping wirns active,

thanks

To use a fresh image without DNNA you need to disable DHCP and disconnect the ethernet cable until it asks for settings.

Internet access is required for authorization. Even with no connection to DNNA WiRNS still needs to connect to a time server.

I have settings in my router to be sure there will be no connection to DNNA. This eliminated the need for doing anything special.

I understand exactly what you are saying. With my 4000/4500, once the unit boots with nothing other than video out connected, I NEVER get any screen to enter IP info. I getthe replayTV screen. Hitting, menu or ch guide or replay guide give that Darn you need to authorize the unit screen.

hitting 243 zones also fails to connect (obviously). could this be a prob with the 4k units??

You don't need to do both things, you only need to do one. Disconnecting the cable is likely the easiest...

I think that imagine isn't actually a factory reset image because it didn't start up in the Quick Setup. You could see if you could try a factory reset on that unit. For 4Ks, that's either 3-8-2-Zones or 7-7-7-Zones, I'm not sure which. See if you can perform a factory reset so that it starts up in the quick setup while you have the Ethernet cable unplugged...

That's the first thing I tried. The 5504 I re-imaged would insist on connecting to DNNA until I disabled DHCP.

Well, it's what I did as well. When it came up with the Ethernet cable disconnected, it went into static/manual addressing setup, and I simply entered the WiRNS IP address for the DNS and it connected to WiRNS without going to DNNA at all. Maybe you did something different?

I disconnected the ethernet cable until the manual screen showed up, and entered the WiRNS IP for ALL THREE entries (including gateway). There should be no way it could access the internet. However, it still got the provider list WITHOUT "WiRNS".

That's when I decided to disable DHCP since that's the only way it could be overriding my static settings. Another reboot (of the Replay) and that made the difference.

This could be behavior of the DHCP bug.

Yeah, could be. However, you'd have to have your lease time really short in order to see that type behavior!

DHCP lease time is 1440 minutes (24 hours). The 5504 had been on less than 3 minutes at the time I confirmed DNNA providers.

Well, you'd have to use WireShark to see what happened. It shouldn't have been because it was able to get a DHCP address. I certainly was setup very similarly and didn't have that behavior at all...

It seemed to involve DHCP. Otherwise I have no explanation. It still happened.

Since it didn't happen to me, I can't debug it. However, if you want to run WireShark when it happens and send it to me, I'll be glad to look at it...

You don't need to do both things, you only need to do one. Disconnecting the cable is likely the easiest...

From my recent experience of loading Ryan's 144 Factory Reset image 3 times:
  1. With the newly-imaged HDD ReplayTV powered down, plug in the ethernet cable. Then power up the ReplayTV.
    - This tells the ReplayTV to load the 'Ethernet Drivers'. If the cable is unplugged while the ReplayTV is booting, it won't be able to connect when it needs to.

  2. When the first 'Quick Setup' screen appears, unplug the ethernet cable.
    - When you choose 'Ethernet' instead of 'Modem', you get NO CHOICE for MANUAL CONNECTION - it only tries DHCP.

  3. Eventually, you'll reach a '2 Minute Countdown' - let it fail.
    - *NOW* you'll be able to set up a MANUAL CONNECTION.

  4. Plug in the ethernet cable, fill in the various IPs, select 'Continue'.
By following this method on the 2nd and 3rd attempts, 'Quick Setup' was effortless - pointed to WiRNS Channel Guide the first time - no ZIP CODE dance.

BTW, on the first 2 installs, my ReplayTVs seemed to 'stall' in different places - "Updating control information..."; Getting ZONES 1/7, then 2/15... Checking my dear old WiRNS 2.0.0.0 log, I saw various DNS and NTP errors. I changed the WiRNS DNS entry from my router to an OpenDNS IP. I changed the WiRNS NTP entry from ntp-production.replaytv.net to us.ntp.pool.org. Install #3 flew.

WiRNS 3.x, on a different PC, is next on the list.

P.S. THANKS RYAN!

Well, this just isn't my experience at all, although I have tried that way as well. Actually, over the past month, I've tried a vast amount of different things!

Anyway, I've found the quickest easiest way to get a factory reset unit activated through WiRNS is to leave the Ethernet cable disconnected while powering up the RTV. I don't have any problem with "loading Ethernet Drivers", it goes into the Quick Setup, lets me choose Modem or Ethernet, and when I choose Ethernet, it immediately goes into manual setup without any trouble. I then configure my settings and it connects to WiRNS and sets up perfectly, no complaints about "Ethernet Drivers"!

When I did it that way, although it reported it could 'see' the Gateway and DNS on the 'Details' screen, it couldn't connect no matter how many times I re-tried.

Thus, I tried my 'idea' for #2 and when it worked, I used it again for #3. I don't see the need for all these 'Disable the DHCP Server' posts - pulling the cable is much easier.

It's been SO LONG, or is it I'm SO OLD , I can't remember what it looked like when I turned on my first 2 RadioShack 5040s...

Well, I've had my fill for now of opening cases, cleaning, troubleshooting (3 bad HDDs, 1 bad P/S), re-imaging, etc...

the system reset to default worked and brought up the manual ipconfig page (382 zones). thx for the reminder.

tried updating...and re-starting...and still get the windows crash message. wirns console log below (cut and paste before windows killed it.) Sorry, i dont see any line #s here, where should i find them?

looks like its failing at NTP, but how can I check or enter settings if I cant start it? i notice when it crashes, it also kills the monitor.

any insight appreciated. I know this can work cos I saw it work before, and I can get it to run fine on another XP machine.

Really? I see line numbers in all of the exception logging. I'm glad that updating to .Net 3.5 apparently fixed your problem. From the log you posted, I can see that your WiRNS IP address didn't get configured, so you would have needed to manually configure it...

Is there a way to throttle smartupdate more (or make throttle adjustable?). I've noticed that every now and then I seem to hang on one of the replays during a record. I think it may involve update

IE

[8/9/2011 10:26:58] Refreshing RecordingGuide for: Replay 3(192.168.20.13)
[8/9/2011 10:27:28] There was an error refreshing the recording guide for Replay 3
[8/9/2011 10:27:28] Attempting to use a cached version if one is available.

I've also noticed that when using channel guide that if I pick reply 3, I get replay2 listed as the name and it downloads from the IP for replay 1. ?!?!?

thanks

I think if you looked at (and had posted) the debug.log, you would see that there is a problem with Replay 3...

I'm not sure what "smartupdate" is, if you're talking about the every four hour refresh, there's really nothing to throttle. It's a simple request for the guide refresh, and WiRNS tries twice just to take care of the case where the RTV might be busy...

I'm not sure about what your saying about the ChannelGuide. I might think that something about your Replay 3 guide data is corrupt, maybe due to whatever the communications problem is...
