UPDATED SEPTEMBER 9TH 2005:

The whole procedure is now available at http://www.myehud.com/4dtv including links to manufacturers, parts, pieces, files, and instructions.

The executive summary is:
This guide should allow the savvy person to have full
program guide and control of their 4DTV Satellite receiver
from their ReplayTV 4000 or 5000 series PVR.

While not released as yet, and delayed longer then anyone would have liked, is the DVRBB solution from the Satellite Forum.

I have the prototype, so I do know that it works. I've been using the device for a year or so now.

The device is about the size of a couple decks of cards. It uses a set of flash memory chips to handle both the programming and conversion tables. It also has a set of sensor wires that monitor the actuator movement, so that it sends the channel change when the dish stops moving.

Anyway, it's a choice before long that doesn't need another PC to be in the Home Theater stand.

When will the DVRBB be ready for general release? I can't say. The developer has moved, had some health issues, kind of a perfect storm. But he's working again on the project and the software issues are pretty much put to bed.

Now that I have active support from TMS to get the full 4DTV listings from Zap2it, there is the new, but quickly solvable issue of the new lineup channel numbers. I've compiled a full channel number set, based in large part with the McCain listing to the DVRBB guy and will adjust it as needed.

I'm as anxious as you are, as I'll need a new production model to fill out the channel changes, adds etc. since my prototype build was created.

I _was_ willing to wait.

Fortunately courtesy of TuneItAll, and a cheap PC, I don't
have to wait!!! It's been almost a month of having the Replay
control my 4DTV, get wild feeds recorded, etc., and my girlfriend
couldn't be happier (one remote to master).

I hope DVRBB comes out. I don't care if it does now.

I been waiting for the DVRBB to come out for almost 2 years now, "I think" so
Yes TuneItAll has been a biggie for me and my 4DTV. But I will be more then happy to see DVRBB comes out. size of a couple decks of cards......... I always like smaller size

But right now TuneItAll/TapeItAll is just what I needed. Money well spent

Can someone give me a list of components, i.e. hardware and software needed beyond the replaytv and the 4dtv receiver to accomplish this feat? Also, a connection diagram would be useful. I got the Tapeitall software and the IR blaster but am not sure I can set the whole thing up.

Thanks in advance.

You need a tuneitall pc, the ir blaster, the serial cable from
the replay to the pc, the WiRNS server running somewhere,
and the rest is covered in my first posts...

If there's specific things not answered let me know, I'm always
trying to improve things

Sept 16 2005:
G5018 is SCIFI. Previous listings had it at G5004.

Changed G5004 to be named "G5004"
Added G5018 to map to SCIFI and added to the TuneItAll metafile.

Unless other postings follow this one.. this post will be edited to reflect further changes.

PostPosted: Mon Oct 31, 2005 7:10 pm    Post subject: question about step 6 - no serial control option, only IR Bl Reply with quote

When following the directions from http://www.myehud.com/4dtv/, I'm running into trouble with step 6. I don't get an option for serial control.

WiRNS - 4DTV shows up as an option, but when I select it I get the IR Blaster configuration screens and no option for Serial Control. Any thoughts? I've had a few false starts getting this up and running and could use a pointer in the right direction.

The other pieces seem to be in place. TuneItAll is installed and changes the channels on the 4DTV box when I use it's test buttons. WiRNS is downloading what looks like a good set of listings, and those listings are appearing on the ReplayTV. I just can't seem to get the serial connection from the PC to the ReplayTV set up. I have reset the Replay TV to factory defaults, but I get the same results.

The unit is a ReplayTV 5080 runing ReplayTV Software version 530511440.

forgot to include some other information that might be relevant, including my WiRNS version: WiRNS.exe 1.3 build 2 revision 3. In another post (http://planetreplay.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=9294&sid=b8742afa1411ea9c0ce4aee454bb161b) I found a reference to the same problem being fixed by version 1.2.5, but it seems like going back to an earlier version might cause other problems.

PostPosted: Mon Oct 31, 2005 8:08 pm    Post subject: no serial control Reply with quote

Serial control appears for every lineup in which "DirecTV" is part of the description.

If you enable serial control (in WirNS main page) then it adds that string to every lineup name. Thus MetaConnect becomes "MetaConnect of Palo Alto (DirecTV)" and so forth.

I'm actually using the 4DTV instead of metaconnect... but same concept.

So simple steps:
1. Enable serial control in wirns
WiRNS main Screen
Configuration
DataDirect Configuration
Left column 4 up from the bottom check "Serial Control"

2. Then reload the lineups under WirNS. I'm not sure this is necessary so you can try without it.

3. Then change zip code and reload the lineups and you'll find you can use serial contorl with them because they will all now have (DirecTV) in their name.

Hope that helps. If it does, please post the parts that helped. If not, please post what didn't work

Thanks, that seems to have given me the serial option that I was lacking. You might think about adding that to the step-by-step document as something to check. Is that box normally checked by default?

I have one more problem. The TuneItAll software is able to send the right signals to the 4dtv box to change the channels when I use the test button in the Remotes tab in the TuneItAll dialog boxes, but TuneItAll is not responding to signals coming from the ReplayTV via the serial cable.

The log (quoted below) indicates that TuneItAll is trying to do something, but I can't see anything in there that's obviously an error. (I also opened up Hyperterminal and set it to Com3, and confirmed that there is something coming through the cable before I thought about looking at the log).

Any suggestions?

Here are some screen captures of my TuneItAll configuration screens, just in case I'm missing something simple. Again, TuneItAll is working "outbound", it's just not responding to the "inbound" signals from the ReplayTV.

Thanks again for the quick response to my earlier question.

Here are the log entries that are generated when I press the UP channel button :

Are you using meta_4dtv.csv and rp4dtv.txt from my site?

The tuneitall screen shows channel "1020" which makes no sense...

I suspect you've got a COM port issue. Try running Hyperterm on the com ports one by one... and issuing replaytv channel change commands... until you see text coming through.

What should the input from the serial port look like in HyperTerminal? What I get when I press the UP and DOWN channel buttons, and then try to choose some channels from the channel guide, HyperTerminal displays:
Code:

zFFFFF     F
                                    F

I copied those two files from http://www.myehud.com/4dtv/ to my c:\program files\TuneItAll folder and specified "rp4dtv.txt" in the script setting for Tuner #1 on the Setup screen. Is there some other setting that has to be configured? The rp4dtv.txt script calls the meta_4dtv.csv file, correct?

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling TuneItAll without effect. I did notice something odd. When I uninstall and reinstall TuneItAll, it remembers the previous Com Port and Script settings, even when I delete the c:\program files\TuneItAll folder between installs. I wasn't able to find any registry keys where these setting are stored, so I'm not sure how those settings are being preserved across installs.

I'm not sure what other kind of serial port issues I could be running into. Any further ideas about what I'm missing?

Also, apologies for my earlier comment - when I went back through the instructions, I see that the WiRNS Serial Port port setting is called out in step 5. I think I had just stared at it a little too long. I really thought that I had followed the directions exactly, and I hope I'm not missing something equally simple.

Thanks again for the assistance.

I added that info after your suggestion... it wasn't there before

I don't know what to tell you about TuneItAll... it's been so long since I installed it I don't remember what I had to do...

Did you try using hypterterm and making sure that the serial port is TRULY getting the signals the ReplayTV is sending? I strongly suspect that's where the problem is. If I had to guess I'd say a missing null modem. ?

Found something. The ^&$%^! text files (rp4dtv.txt, meta_4dtv.csv) were downloading with UNIX line breaks instead of DOS/Windows line breaks. I finally noticed that if I opened the files up in a full-featured text editor like TextPad, they looked okay, but if I opened them up in Notepad all of the text showed up on the same line with a box character everywhere there should have been a line break. *sigh* I haven't had this issue bite me in a long time, but I was aware of it.

This might have been caused by a change in the webserver configuration, by an FTP program uploading the files, etc. Best solution would probably be to replace the files hosted at http://www.myehud.com/4dtv/, but in the meantime one fix is to open the files up in Windows program that understands both formats and to resave the file, making sure to tell it to use the PC file format. Opening them up in excel and re-saving them as CSV files might also work.

I'm still not 100% working - the signals that TuneItAll is sending out do not seem to be changing the satellite, although it does seem to be sending the right channel numbers - but at least using the ReplayTVs remote results in something being sent to the 4DTV receiver. I'm starting to hope!

see http://www.editpadpro.com/tricklinebreak.html for anybody not familiar with this line break issue.

The problems always look simple after you fix them, don't they :-/

Whew! Thanks - I was worried that I had made an RTFM mistake!

Okay, after resaving the files in the DOS file format, things are working, except it won't change satellites. Here is what happens.

I choose channel 19 on the replay TV, which corresponds to this line in the meta_4dtv.csv file:
Code:
131   19   NEXT   SATCOM C3   1   C3   125

When I select that channel, I see the following on the digital display of the 4DTV tuner box:

Code:
43 <pause> 125

on the 4DTV "Digital Sidecar Remote" that I use, the normal keystrokes for changing to Satellite C3 would be <satellite><4><3>, because the same button is used for the C and the 4. What appears to be happening is that the signal that is normally sent by the <satellite> button is not being sent by TuneItAll. The output displayed on the digital display of the 4DTV is exactly what I would see if I forgot to press the satellite button on the regular remote.

Any thoughts?

Would it be possible to repost the meta_4dtv.csv and rp4dtv.txt that you are currently using? It seems to me that the likely problem would be in the rp4dtv.txt file, but I don't understand the script well enough to see where the problem might be.

Thanks again for all of the assistance.

Sure, when I get home I will zip them all up, then post the zip.

I should have done that... didn't consider corruption -- binary mode FTP is supposed to take care of that.

It finally occured to me to use the Learn function in TuneItAll to redefine the SAT button, and everything seems to be working now.

In retrospect, the two big issues that were causing me all of my problems were:
a) the UNIX file format on the text files
b) the need to redefine the SAT key definition in TuneItAll

Thanks for all of the help. I still need to get the Time Base Corrector hooked up, but I think the hard part of setting this up is past me

Thanks. Just in case anybody else is trying to download this file, the hyperlink appears to be http://www.myehud.com/4dtv/4dtv.zip.

Turns out that I had to make one more change to get TuneItAll to change channels when moving between satellites. The channel change signal was being sent too soon after the satellite change signal, so that only the last two digits were being read. So, instead of changing to G1-103, the 4DTV tuner would end up on G1-03. When changing channels within the same satellite, everything worked fine.

The fix seems to be to alter this line in the rp4dtv.txt (using http://www.myehud.com/4dtv/rp4dtv.txt as a starting point):
Code:
Wait 4000

to
Code:
Wait 5000

Maybe my satellite dish is a little slower than the one Ehud was using with the sample rp4dtv.txt file that he provides.
